Emergency Food Aid in Scotland – Aberdeen
Following the publication of a research report on emergency food aid in Scotland
(www.foodaidscotland.org), the Poverty Alliance is running a series of regional workshop events for those involved in delivering emergency food aid in Scotland. The aim is to provide opportunities for networking, peer support and learning, and to connect with wider anti-poverty work and campaigns.
Our first session held in Glasgow on 30th April was oversubscribed and feedback from attendees highlights the quality of discussion, learning and new contacts which were made. A briefing note on the session will be published on our website soon.
The third of these sessions will be:
Thursday 27th August
1.30pm to 4.30pm
St Nicholas Room, Civic Rooms, Town House,
Aberdeen, AB10 1FY
The session will likely include presentations from invited speakers and group work discussion on the following themes:
– Working with advice and support services
– Sanctions and the Scottish Welfare Fund
– Stigma and challenging public attitudes to poverty

Living & Dying With Dementia In Scotland
“An ageing population and the resulting projected growth in dementia will pose a particular set of challenges to the health and social care system in Scotland over the coming decades. In order to meet these challenges we need to start removing the barriers which currently prevent people with dementia from accessing high quality end of life care.”
This is the conclusion of a far reaching report by Marie Curie Cancer Care published in February. Stonehaven is part of a pilot in Aberdeenshire, to help the town become a dementia friendly community.
“A Dementia friendly community is a community where businesses, shops, services, facilities and groups are welcoming, supportive and inclusive for people with dementia and their carers.”
Want to know more, contact Moira Watson on 07879 551831.

Addiction isn’t a spectator sport. Eventually the whole family gets to play.
Substance misuse affects us all; many families in our communities have a loved one caught up in alcohol or drug addiction. The lives of these families are overshadowed by despair, worry and isolation.
Recovery is the hope on the horizon that keeps family members going, and it is the whole family that needs to recover.
The good news is, help and support is available, not only for the person battling addiction but for the whole family. However, the fear of being judged by friends and neighbours often consigns families to a life in secrecy and isolation and holds them back from getting the support that could make a difference.
Meeting others in the same situation or talking to someone in recovery from alcohol or drug addiction can help families to realise that recovery is possible and happens a lot more often than we realise.
Recovery – A Family Affair
Making recovery visible in our communities and celebrating the success stories was the aim of a recent Grampian wide event held by Grampian Family Support Forum, a local charity for family members affected by a loved one’s substance misuse. Read the rest of this entry »

The Value of Reminiscence to Kincardine & Deeside Befriending
K & D Befriending exists to reduce the impact of social isolation and loneliness in older people by matching them on a one to one basis with a volunteer befriender. A regular visit from a befriender provides companionship, practical and emotional support, and generally improves physical and mental wellbeing. Reminiscing is recognised as an integral part of what happens. Read the rest of this entry »
