If you were inspired by the Food week activities earlier this month, we’ve plenty in our Live Life Aberdeenshire Digital Library cupboard to keep you creative in the kitchen.

We’ve close to 200 foodie e-books covering weight loss, mug meals, international cuisines, vegan recipes, baking, bread, slow cookers and more.  The celebrity chefs are represented – Jay Rayner, Jamie Oliver, Nick Nairn, Marcus Wareing… even Joe Wicks wades in with “Wean in 15”.  There are also plenty of books for cooking with kids.  Our RB Digital magazine library has the latest issues of BBC Good Food, Food Network magazine and Australian Women’s Weekly Food free to download and read plus back issues of dozens of food and nutrition titles.

Sure, we can get recipes off the net.  Who doesn’t?  At least with these published ones, you know they’ve been rigorously tested and the nutrition notes are accurate.  They’re also good fun to browse 😋

While you’re cooking, pop on one of the playlists from Freegal, our free music streaming service. “What’s Cooking? a culinary playlist” includes Green Onions (Booker T. & The MG’s) and Hungry Heart (Bruce Springsteen).  Can you guess which Weird Al Yankovich track is also on there?

Reading for enjoyment has the benefits of reducing stress, alleviating depression, reducing age-related cognitive decline, and it helps you to sleep better.  It even contributes to a longer life! (Healthline, 2019).

According to an article in Psychology Today (2018) listening to audiobooks also calms and comforts us, boosts our mood, reduces stress, and it can actually be quite thrilling.

What you read is entirely up to you.  What do you enjoy?  What are you curious about?  What do you want to learn?

In Live Life Aberdeenshire’s Digital Library, you can choose from over 20,000 books or audiobooks online.  Search by author, title or by type of book.  Browse some of the collections like Reading Well for Mental Health or Food for Thought or look through the UK’s Reading Well list of Mood-boosting books for inspiration.  There are plenty of children’s books as well that you can share with your family, especially if you’re supporting learning at home.  Sharing books by reading aloud – stories or information books – is a bonding experience that improves the wellbeing of the reader and the child.

Our e-magazine library lets you download the latest issues of UK and international magazines like BBC Top Gear or Closer magazine.

Listening to music can buoy your mood and fend off depression (Time Magazine, 2018).

As a resident of K & M, you also have access to Live Life Aberdeenshire’s music streaming service, Freegal.  Stream any of over 10 million hit songs – true!  Whether classic Dolly Parton or ACDC’s 2020 album “Power Up” is your thing, you’ll find something to enjoy.  User-compiled playlists are also great background music for working from home or pottering about.  You’ll be amazed at what you’ll find.
