The Crerar Hotels Community Prize
‘When the old are not allowed to tell their story, the young grow up without history. When the young are not listened to, we lose unique ideas and have no future.’ Gunhild Hagestad, Ph.D., 1999 UN Year of the Older Persons’ keynote address
Crerar Hotels Trust is a charitable trust funded by the Crerar Hotel Group.
Giving back to local communities to improve the quality of everyday lives is at the heart of Crerar Hotels – our motto is “Hotels with Heart and Soul” – each year almost half of the hotel profits are entrusted to the Crerar Hotels Trust for distribution to charities and community projects local to Crerar Hotels throughout Scotland and Yorkshire. This year, in addition to these donations and as a pilot scheme, Crerar Hotels has decided to launch the Crerar Hotels Community Prize. This fund will be awarded to a local community project which brings together young and old people in a meaningful way. Read the rest of this entry »

Local charities invited to get online and talk funding with Lloyds TSB Foundation for Scotland
Charities working in communities across Scotland are invited to have an online chat about funding opportunities with Lloyds TSB Foundation for Scotland.
Every month, the grant maker hosts advice surgeries using online face to face
technology. Charities with a Skype account or Google Hangout are invited to book an appointment at
any of the 10 monthly surgeries between March and December. The Foundation is particularly keen
to hear from grassroots charities which benefit disadvantaged people and who need funding to continue
their work. Unlike many other funders, the Foundation’s Henry Duncan Awards programme will
contribute towards staff and running costs, as well as new projects and services. And charities which have had a grant before can also apply again. The advice
surgery gives charities the chance to find out if they meet the funding criteria and to get tips
on how to fill in the application form.
Online advice surgeries will be held on 5th August, 2nd September, 7th October,
4th November, 2nd December. Appointments last 45 minutes and can be booked by calling
0131 444 4020 or emailing enquiries@ltsbfoundationforscotland.org.uk
Coastal Communities Fund (CCF)
The Coastal Communities Fund (CCF) is being extended to 2020/21, with
a minimum further investment of £90 million, intended to unlock the potential
of communities around Britain’s coastlines. The additional funding will help
seaside localities to be revitalised and drive forward local economies. The
CCF is designed to support the economic development of coastal communities by promoting
sustainable economic growth and jobs, so that people are better able to respond to the changing
economic needs and opportunities of their area. It can fund a wide range of projects, including those
that support charities, the environment, education and health. Innovative bids have previously been
welcomed from businesses, social enterprises, local enterprise partnerships, charities, voluntary
groups and local authorities supporting economic development within the community.

Scotland the Bread are crowd funding
Scotland grows a lot of wheat but precious little of it is used to make bread. We rely on imports and so have little control over this staple food. It turns out that the wheat varieties in today’s bread may well have less of the nutrients needed for health than in the past. Better grain and better bread can help solve our growing health problems, Scotland the Bread have started research to find more nutritious wheats, suitable for low-impact farming. And they’re passing on the skills that turn locally-grown wheat into delicious, healthy bread.
To help local communities bring better bread within everyone’s reach, Scotland the Bread are supporting six groups to grow their own healthy bread, from the soil to the slice. See here for more details on how to get better bread within the reach of everyone!

Community Food and Health (Scotland) Development Funding Programme
The Community Food and Health (Scotland) development funding programme is open to groups who would like to develop new or existing activities that will improve access to, or take up of, a healthy balanced diet in low-income communities in Scotland.
Three funding schemes were launched on 12 June 2015:
1. The Capacity Building Fund offers grants up to £500 for groups and agencies running food and health activities in low-income areas working to strengthen their organisations.
2. The one-year Development Fund offers grants from £500 to £2,000 that can develop, recruit for, and complete food and health activities by the end of September 2016.
3. The two-year Development Fund offers grants from £500 to £5,000 for groups and agencies planning food activities requiring more time to become established or to reach those most in need.
Applications can be submitted for more than one of these funding schemes as long as the criteria for that fund is met. Applications for the Capacity Building Fund can be made at any time until all the funding for this year has been allocated. The deadline for applications for the one-year and two year Development Funds is 7 August 2015.
