The three day event includes visits to local projects, exhibitions, fringe workshops, workshops and open space sessions, discussion panels and participants will also agree the new Scottish Rural Parliament Manifesto. Oil Clubs in Marr Benefiting Communities.

The Marr Community Planning Group (MCPG) has monitored three oil clubs in Marr for a year to see if they are a cheaper way to order oil.

The results have shown that members of the three oil clubs (Ballater – Pannanich Oil Club, Braemar Oil Club and Rhynie, Lumsden and Clatt Oil Club) have obtained significant benefits, saving on average between £20 – £30 each time they order oil. Read the rest of this entry »

Recovery Support

The Scottish Recovery Consortium are offering 8-week course of study and practice, running annually in Sept ULab

This “U Lab” course is an a global programme run by the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) which supports people and communities to make changes.  U.Lab connects people with each other – across Scotland and internationally – and provides access to world-leading learning about change.  It’s free, and open to anyone to take part.

Charity uses Minecraft to keep kids safe

A charity has launched itself into the virtual world of Minecraft.

The Royal National Lifeboat Institute (RNLI) wants kids addicted to the game to take part in a “Beach Builder Challenge” where they can have fun and also learn how to stay safe around water this summer.

Available to play from 1 August, the challenge has been created by the RNLI to teach children about beach safety at a time when many will be visiting the coast during school summer holidays.

Mill of Benholm Open Event

The Friends of the Mill of Benholm are holding an Open Afternoon on Saturday 20th August from 2-5 pm at the Mill.  mill of benholm

The mill wheel will be turning and there will be a range of family friendly activities, supported by local community groups; from mini beast hunts to craft and first aid demonstrations, face painting, forest school and eco activities, mindfulness sessions and more !

There will also be the chance to meet the architect and business consultant that are conducting the feasibility study and find out more about potential ideas for the Mill’s future.

The “Friends” will be serving cream teas and all of the activities are FREE … All Welcome.

Gardening is good for your health

The National Gardens Scheme published an independent report on the benefits of gardens and gardening on health. The report has three aims: to bring together the wide range of literature on gardens and wellbeing; to demonstrate how gardening interventions have an important place in the health and care system and to place gardens and health within the current strategic health policy context. The report includes a menu of recommendations that aims to encourage the NHS, government departments, national bodies, local government, health and wellbeing boards and clinical commissioning groups to make more of the diverse health benefits of gardening in support of their priorities. By registering with myaccount you can access these using just one username and password.

myaccount is already being used by Aberdeenshire parents as a secure and easy way of making school meal payments but it offers many other benefits, including:
– Showing your bin collection dates, local councillors and nearest recycling centres
– Allowing you to sign up for notifications about school closures, local events, job alerts and council news
– And, coming soon, a way of hooking into free wifi at key council sites
