Reading for enjoyment has the benefits of reducing stress, alleviating depression, reducing age-related cognitive decline, and it helps you to sleep better. It even contributes to a longer life! (Healthline, 2019).
According to an article in Psychology Today (2018) listening to audiobooks also calms and comforts us, boosts our mood, reduces stress, and it can actually be quite thrilling.
What you read is entirely up to you. What do you enjoy? What are you curious about? What do you want to learn?
In Live Life Aberdeenshire’s Digital Library, you can choose from over 20,000 books or audiobooks online. Search by author, title or by type of book. Browse some of the collections like Reading Well for Mental Health or Food for Thought or look through the UK’s Reading Well list of Mood-boosting books for inspiration. There are plenty of children’s books as well that you can share with your family, especially if you’re supporting learning at home. Sharing books by reading aloud – stories or information books – is a bonding experience that improves the wellbeing of the reader and the child.
Our e-magazine library lets you download the latest issues of UK and international magazines like BBC Top Gear or Closer magazine.
Listening to music can buoy your mood and fend off depression (Time Magazine, 2018).
